As the beta nears its end, WoW Forever has implemented a major overhaul of its racial mechanics. This not only necessitates adjustments to your character’s combat habits but also inevitably shifts the rankings of various races across different in-game combat scenarios.

Consequently, both for the remainder of the beta and following the official launch of WoW Forever, you will need to re-evaluate the value and standing of each race based on their specific roles and core gameplay styles.

In this guide, IGGM analyzes the impact of these changes on the primary races in WoW Classic+ and provides a ranking of racial strength across various scenarios.

Changes to WoW Forever Races Following New Overhaul IGGM Reveals Tier Lists for Various Scenarios

Overview of changes to races

The most significant aspect of these racial adjustments in WoW Forever is not the specific numerical tweaks to individual abilities, but rather a fundamental shift in the design philosophy behind racial traits.

Previously, the advantages of certain races were strictly tied to specific weapon types, forcing players to choose between their preferred race and their preferred weapon.

WoW Forever has now removed these weapon restrictions, granting players greater freedom in their racial selection. Furthermore, some races that were previously constrained can now achieve more reliable WoW Forever gold generation.

At the same time, the active abilities and passive effects of many races have been adjusted. Some races have lost their former combat advantages, while others have gained more direct, versatile stat bonuses.

Therefore, in this new version of Forever, evaluating a race’s strength requires a holistic approach, considering factors such as leveling efficiency, combat stats, and survivability, rather than focusing on a single ability.

It is important to note that there is no single best race; for instance, a race might excel during the leveling phase but fail to provide sufficient damage output in endgame PvE encounters.

Thus, if you are considering a new race, the most logical approach is to first identify the type of content you engage with most frequently, and then consult the corresponding racial strength rankings.

Key racial changes and practical impact

While nearly every race has been affected by this major overhaul, not all changes are equally significant. IGGM has highlighted the most noteworthy adjustments below.

Tauren

Tauren are among the most notable losers in this round of adjustments. The original effect associated with Endurance has lost its 1% hit chance bonus, gaining instead a 2% bonus to critical strike damage and critical healing.

This change is not entirely negative, as bonuses to critical strike damage and critical healing can benefit various types of characters. However, the hit stat is directly linked to the consistency of one’s damage output.

Under the previous system, a 1% hit chance helped Tauren players reduce the risk of their attacks or spells missing the target. With this adjustment, the benefit you receive now depends on the additional effects triggered by attacks that have already successfully landed.

If your priority in WoW Classic Plus is consistent damage output, this change may not fully compensate for the loss of hit chance.

Although Tauren have received some functional compensations, such as improvements to movement speed and crowd-control abilities, these do not fully offset the loss of core combat stats.

Consequently, setting aside overall rankings, Tauren race is better suited for players who prioritize survivability or prefer a tanking playstyle. Furthermore, you can always buy WoW Forever gold to acquire additional items that help bolster specific stats.

Orc

In this update, Orc trait Axe Specialization has been replaced by the more versatile Savage, which provides a flat 1% increase to critical strike chance.

The primary advantage of this change is that it decouples racial traits from specific weapon choices. You no longer need to worry about whether to avoid playing an Orc based on your preferred weapon type, allowing for greater flexibility in gearing according to your class’s requirements.

At the same time, however, other Orc abilities have been nerfed. For instance, the cooldown of Blood Fury has been extended from 2 minutes to 3 minutes.

For WoW Forever classes that rely on short-burst windows, this impacts ability rotations and the timing of burst phases.

Nevertheless, Orcs retain several key traits, such as Hardiness, which reduces the duration of stuns by 20%, that remain highly valuable in PvP combat.

Therefore, the race has not lost all its competitive viability; rather, its role has shifted more toward DPS characters who can leverage critical strike bonuses and burst-oriented abilities.

Undead

Previously, Undead was a highly popular choice in WoW Forever, but recent adjustments have had a significant impact on the race.

First, Touch of the Grave has been reworked: it now features a 25-second internal cooldown, no longer scales with Shadow damage, and has a reduced proc rate.

These changes mean that the passive damage output and additional benefits provided by Undead racial are now much more limited.

For characters that previously relied on frequent procs, and benefited from scaling those effects through better gear, this will undoubtedly hinder overall performance.

In short, the current viability of Undead depends heavily on the context: while they still offer excellent sustain during the leveling phase, they fall short in high-difficulty PvE content, where the lack of consistent damage bonuses puts you at a disadvantage.

WoW Forever Races

Class Ranking

For leveling

During the leveling phase, the primary goal is to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime while maintaining survivability.

Therefore, race rankings should not be based solely on raw damage output; instead, they should prioritize sustain, specifically, which races can reach the level cap fastest by reducing the time consumed on recovery.

  • S-Tier: Undead, Troll

  • A-Tier: Night Elf, Tauren, Skyborn

  • B-Tier: Orc, Human, Gnome, Dwarf

For endgame PvE

In WoW Classic+ endgame PvE, the focus shifts to sustained damage output (DPS) in dungeons and raids, combat rotation efficiency, and performance against specific enemy types.

In this context, a passive, always-active stat bonus is generally more reliable than an effect that only triggers under specific conditions.

  • S-Tier: Skyborn, Human, Orc

  • A-Tier: Night Elf, Troll, Gnome

  • B-Tier: Dwarf, Tauren

For PvP

In PvP, the criteria for a strong race include mobility, health regeneration, and the ability to break free from crowd control, as well as the capacity to deliver significant damage within a limited burst window.

  • S-Tier: Humans, Gnomes

  • A-Tier: Orcs, Undead, Dwarves, Night Elves

  • B-Tier: Tauren, Trolls, Skyborn

While the race rankings in WoW Forever may shift in the future due to new updates, staying informed about these changes and understanding the specific requirements of different combat scenarios, will allow you to quickly identify the best race for your needs!
